A message from Sharon Cyrus-Savary, the North Atlantic region liaison to AMHCA’s Graduate Student Committee

Hello Everyone,

I am the North Atlantic region liaison to AMHCA’s Graduate Student Committee. To build more of a foundation throughout the region, the Graduate Student Committee has decided to create a new position, Student Regional Representative. The representatives will help support the state chapters and provide information about local events.

Student Regional Representative of AMHCA – A student regional representative of American Mental Health Counselors Association is one who will work to advocate for AMHCA and the Graduate Student Committee (GSC) and be responsible for reporting directly to the GSC Regional Liaison. This individual is also encouraged to act as a mentor and present at local colleges and universities and represent AMHCA and the GSC in a professional manner. Responsibilities of this individual may include the following but is not limited to:

1. Gather articles for the student corner in the Advocate, AMHCA monthly newsletter
2. Help create/form state GSCs
3. Present at local conferences
4. Obtain information about happenings in the state
5. Help spread the word about AMHCA
6. Keep in contact with the state chapter
7. Work with the state leaders on current events in state
8. Conduct presentations at colleges and university in their state
9. Advocacy reporting back to his/her GSC regional liaison
10. Go to local events and conferences
11. Liaise between GSC and geographic area to keep all parties informed of happenings
12. Get the word out to professors at colleges and universities
13. Each Student Regional Rep will be in charge of specific state (s) and report back to GSC regional liaison

The NBCC Foundation is now accepting applications for two new counseling scholarships.

The scholarships are available to students with recent military experience and those living in rural areas.

The Military Scholarship Program is designed to encourage military servicemembers and veterans to embark on a career in counseling. The program provides financial support to students who enroll in a CACREP-accredited counseling program during or after military service, and commit to serving military personnel after graduation.
Similarly, the Rural Scholarship Program offers financial support to students from rural areas who enroll in a CACREP-accredited counseling program and commit to serving in these communities after graduation.

Scholarships for both programs will be in the amount of $3,000 and five of each type will be offered every year. Recent military experience is required for the military scholarship, and residence in a rural area is a requirement for the rural scholarship. Applications received by November 1, 2009 will receive priority review in November 2009. More reviews will occur in 2010. Graduate Student Committee of AMHCA

Graduate students have the opportunity to be involved at the national level of the Mental Health organization! Doors of opportunity are opened and a learning experience takes place when students become involved! Currently, the American Mental Health Counselors Association (AMHCA) has a very strong Graduate Student Committee. Jason Stout (past president for the Graduate Student Committee) had taken a very strong initiative to get more students involved with this committee. Currently the board is busy working to establish this goal by creating sub committees for the Liaison positions. This position provides the opportunity for more students to get involved and also to spread the word of what a great organization this is!

There are several positions that are held for graduate students on this committee such as Liaisons, which act as an AMHCA representative reaching out to each state and University. Currently we have four regional Liaisons and they are working hard to gather their subcommittees for each region. We also have the Chair who works closely with the AMHCA board and facilitates goals to be accomplished throughout the year. The Chair-Elect also works closely with the AMHCA board and the Chair to help with goals and to also prepare to take over as Chair for the New Year that starts in July. We also have a Secretary position which takes on responsibilities such as taking notes for our monthly teleconference meetings, distributing the minutes to the committee along with the board and keeping our webpage up to date.

Beginning in July there will be new positions available for any graduate student in a Mental Health program. Being on the Graduate Student Committee does not consume much of your time and is well worth the efforts put in. It will help to establish leadership qualities and will give opportunities to network around America! We are also currently looking for any students who are interested in becoming a subcommittee member.
